Aix Street
Erik Sprohge was born in Riga, Latvia, spent his early childhood in Germany and started grade school in Houston, Texas. At sixteen he was awarded a scholarship at the Houston Museum School of Art and concurrently built dioramas for the Houston Museum of Natural History. He then earned a five-year degree in architecture at The Rice Institute and in 1954 won the William Ward Watkin Traveling Fellowship enabling him to travel extensively in Europe.
Erik studied painting at the Institute Allende in San Miguel Allende, Mexico and at the Glassell School, Houston.
In the 70’s he was design partner with Converse, Sprohge & Cox, Architects, after which he specialized in architectural illustration. Erik has had one man shows at the old Dreyer and Lantern Lane Galleries, at the Jack Meier, Lowell Collins and Watercolor Art Society-Houston, Galleries. His works can be seen in Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Pennsylvania, and Washington.
His current direction is realism in watercolor, he has worked in many mediums and done series based on Mexico and on Native Americans but the main emphasis is always on the spirit behind the images.
