Juror Statement:
First of all, thank you for inviting me to juror WAS-H’s Annual Member Exhibit this week. I was struck by the high quality of work, and see this organization has many very good painters. I find the process of jurying takes place by attrition, and I began by first limiting the show to the number of paintings that we could hang. Once the show is selected then I go on to pick the awards. Design is the number one thing I look for, the picture has to have impact. The assuredy of painting – use of materials and the paint, the understanding of presentation – that comes in focus next. Then I get to choices, looking for subjects that are cultural or poetic in nature. And finally, I weigh all this with work I see across the country and how it compares. I like to build a balanced show of art, selecting both figurative and abstract pieces. I feel the award winners best represent these principles, and demonstrate subtleties the more you view the work.
