Chinese Brush Painting

In this workshop the student will learn the concept of the Chinese way of appreciating and discovering the principles and methods of Chinese ink painting. We will paint three different flowers using ink, color, different rice paper, and brushstrokes. The instructor will demonstrate each technique. Students receive individual attention adapted to their particular skill level and interest. Beginners are welcome.

Come join the fun. Learn how to use acrylic paints and many of the mediums available. Discover techniques for texturing your canvas, paper and illustration board. Find out how to add importance and create a center of interest to your paintings. Master how to add realism to abstracted backgrounds to create new and unique works of art.

Painting Nature Close Up

This class will involve painting intimate views of nature for strong impact. Suitable subjects would include a bird’s nest, a few pinecones, a branch or two of berries, grapes, a few flowers, etc. You will paint from your own photos, which we will crop in class. You will learn to mix a variety of greens for foliage; color theory and composition will be stressed. Nellie paints fairly realistically, but looser painters can also benefit from this class. Those who have taken this before are welcome to explore these themes further.

This is a beginning drawing class. We will be working in black and white (graphite) to improve your skills in seeing shape, form, lighting and perspective. We will also cover composition with an eye to drawing for still life, landscapes and abstraction. After each element is presented, we will have a practical application exercise, so sharpen those pencils!

Transparent Watercolor Florals

This fun class is an opportunity to use your skills and new skills painting beautiful flowers in transparent watercolor. The student will learn the “how to” in painting flowers, color, composition, transparency and back lighting. It’s a traditional approach to painting in watercolors with a vibrant color twist.

Beginners to advanced students can learn how to reach your personal best in painting realism. You will be given your choice of floral or one of two still life images. The focus of the workshop will be composition, seeing, light source, color, values, and critiquing the works. There will be two instructors guiding you through the assignments, giving demonstrations, and giving individual attention to students.

Mary will teach fundamental to advanced elements of watercolor techniques, with an emphasis on the use of color and wet-on-wet underpaintings to achieve the magical translucence and atmosphere quality so unique to watercolor. Mary is a veteran teacher, volunteering her time to teach a Seniors Class for almost 25 years.
