    1:00 - 4:00pm

    $180 members/$220 non-members

Do you want to push your painting, define your style, and create a body of work that is cohesive and personal? This will be a student-driven class, with more of a coaching/critique vibe, helping each artist work towards a simple goal – to find their “path” whether it be realistic or abstract, portraits, landscapes, still-life based….. whatever it is that inspires you. This class is not a “how-to” class. We will discuss concepts, artistic principles that will help each artist regardless of their style and subject, and do demos that are spontaneous, responding to student problems and needs. Ideally we become a consistent group, whose input is varied and meaningful. The idea is that you will focus on a subject and approach to carry your ideas forward in a connected way. IN PERSON - Valentine's Chocolate Tasting + Painting

    Katie Steck

    Tuesday evening, February 14

    6:30 - 8:30pm

    $40 Members/ $50 Non-Members

What better way to spend Valentine's evening than sampling artisan chocolate and painting with watercolor? In this special evening, you will be tasting six different types of artisan chocolate and using watercolor as a way to represent what you taste in each of the samples.

Like coffee or wine, cacao beans have a unique flavor depending on where they are grown, how they are fermented, roasted, and ground into the delicious treat we call chocolate. In this workshop you will learn how chocolate is made, its connection with art,  taste six different artisan chocolate samples, and get to explore the taste through painting the flavor(s) you notice. Exploring the flavors in this way can help you notice more subtle flavor profiles of your food experience and remember them better afterwards.

The evening is planned as follows:

    1. Welcome

    2. The connection between art and chocolate

    3. Primer on how artisan chocolate is made

    4. Sample chocolate bars and paint the flavors

    5. Conclude

    See student reviews HERE.

Brenda Swenson Workshop: Negative Painting with Watercolor

    March 6 - 9, 2023, 9am - 4pm daily

Discover the exciting results of negative painting with watercolor! Negative painting is the technique of painting around a subject (the negative space) to define it in the composition. Build your confidence in handling glazes, wet into wet, under-paintings and painting into wet passages. Strengthen your understanding of pigments and how they directly relate to the complexed medium of watercolor. During the workshop you’ll learn how to create interesting shapes and depth of color with transparent glazes. Strengthen a painting with overlapping, interlocking shapes and linkage. Students will benefit from daily demonstrations, friendly critiques, and one on one help.

Read more about Brenda's workshop experience HERE.

    Jason Michael Bentley

    Tuesday

    March 14

    12:00 - 3:00pm

    $50 members/$60 non-members

Getting the right color doesn’t have to be a bundle of trial and error. With a bit of knowledge about pigments and their characteristics, we can develop an instinct for efficiently and accurately mixing color. There will be focus on the important and universal role of mixtures formed from primaries, with evaluation on how other tube colors relate in the spectrum. We will explore the warming, cooling, and neutralizing of hues, as well as tinting and shading techniques that maintain richness of chroma... Or not... The point is we’re in control!

We will work on group exercises and also individual work.

    Weaving Whites into Your Paintings

    NEW DATE!

    Carla Gauthier

    Tuesday, March 28

    9:30am - 3:30pm

    $75 members/$85 non-members

The sparkle of white paper with transparent watercolor layers is easy to imagine but tricky to manageWe start with a plan in our heads but suddenly, mid-painting, we step back and notice we have all but lost the areas of white that were pivotal to our composition, and we have a mid-value mess. But take heart – with a few easy steps we can retain our whites and create a connected and unified painting, no matter the subject…..and without using masking fluid. We will do a quick study together to learn the basics, and bring your sketchbook or scrap paper to do a study to weave brilliant white paper through your next artwork.

    Level: Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced

    Supply List

Regular watercolor supplies – good paper, palette, paints and brushes, paper towels, pencil, eraser etc. and your sketchbook or scrap watercolor paper.

IN PERSON - Chocolate Tasting + Painting

    Katie Steck

    Sunday midday

    11:30am to 1:30pm

    $40 Members/ $50 Non-Members

In this special class, you will be tasting six different types of artisan chocolate and using watercolor as a way to represent what you taste in each of the samples.

The class is planned as follows:

    1. Welcome

    2. The connection between art and chocolate

    3. Primer on how artisan chocolate is made

    4. Sample chocolate bars and paint the flavors

    5. Conclude

IN PERSON - Find Your Path

    Carla Gauthier

    Four Thursday afternoons

    April 6, 13, 20, 27

Work outside class is essential.

    Ed Pettitt

    Four Friday afternoons

    April 7, 14, 21, 28

    1:00 - 4:00pm

    $180 members/$220 non-members

Urban sketching is a form of reportage: drawings or paintings created on-site, as a spontaneous response to people, places or incidents. It is the act of placing oneself in a space, attempting to capture and interpret a particular moment in time. Though one can use any medium for urban sketching, pencil and ink drawings colored with watercolor are most common. In this class, we will discuss the history and methodology of urban watercolor sketching, examine different approaches and styles (such as postcard sketching, travel sketching, reportage sketching, mixed media, and Japanese etegami) and create our own urban watercolor sketches!
