With the exception of other mediums that lend themselves well to the direct painting approach, watercolor is best suited to a bit of pre-paint planning and design.

A basic understanding of drawing is essential to any painting program. In this class we will learn the constructive principles of drawing, and apply them to develop space and form in still-life, landscapes, and the portrait, specifically tailored for the art of painting.

Week 1: Tools and principles

  • Understanding the range of pencils, erasures, and blenders.
  • Hand positions and control of the pencil
  • Using helpful guides and optical measuring for building simple and complex shapes

Project:  Draw a collection of stand alone objects with a convincing mass

Week 2: Elements of Design

  • 1 and 2 point perspective
  • The importance of line, shape, space, value, and relative position

Project:  Bringing our elements together to draw a stilllife

Week 3: Atmosphere

Topics:  Detail effectiveness and illusion of distance

Project:  Drawing for a simple landscape

Week 4: Anatomy for the Portrait

  • Understanding the individual features
  • Construction of features and measurements for the head

Project:  Drawing a simple portrait

Note: this is a repeat of September's class, but students are welcome to repeat the class in order to further develop their skills.
