Classes & Workshops | Major Workshops |
Each quarter WAS-H launches a new line-up of classes and workshops, however, we also add classes during the quarter if a teacher suggests an interesting topic that complements our other offerings. Some classes are one-time events, lasting just two or three hours, while others will be recurring classes that span over 2, 3 or 4, 5 or 6 weeks. The workshops offered may be one, two, or three-day workshops. These are typically over a weekend, but sometimes we may have a workshop during the week. Our regular workshops are taught by local artists and are part of our quarterly education offerings. The major workshops are typically offered during our major exhibits, AME (October) and IWE (March) each year and two more during the year. The Major Workshops usually have an artist from outside of Houston who would be well known in the techniques they are teaching. | Taught by nationally renowned artists, Major Workshops are 3- or 4-day workshops offered coincident with the annual major exhibits, the International Watermedia Exhibition in March and the Annual Members Exhibit in October and at least two more during the year. Open to the public Wednesdays 9:30 am - 12:30 pm Students (55 years old and over) can sign up online to reserve a seat to attend our Wednesdays Art for Seniors Classes. Seating is limited but a Virtual option is available if the in-person class is sold out. These Instructor led classes are available on scheduled dates at $5 for members and $7 for non-members. Wednesdays without instruction are free and are paint on your own. Students must bring their own supplies. The supply list will be posted by registration opening. Registration opens 9 days before class is scheduled. Sign-up for an Art for Seniors' Class
Open to the public 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm Wednesdays OR 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm Fridays (See schedule for dates) Join us to draw and paint from live models, in a variety of poses, with model stand, directional lighting, and props. Artists are provided with tables & chairs, easels & stools, or artist benches. Bring your drawing and watermedia painting supplies (no aerosols, solvents, or oil-based paints). No instruction given.. WAS-H Members are invited to come paint together. No instruction. Artists bring their own supplies and projects. Sessions are free, however, online registration is required. | Artist Talks and Demos Open to the public 1st or 2nd Sundays (See schedule for dates) 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm WAS-H invites local artists to do a live demonstration. The audience is encouraged to ask questions and engage with the demo artist. Pre-registration is not required but online registration is highly recommended for this event. Members Only 1st Sundays Gallery Opening Wednesday before Opening Sunday is the Registration and Drop-off Deadline. Registration closes promptly at 3pm. The Monthly Members Show is a non-juried exhibition for WAS-H members each month, with the exception of March and October which is IWE and AME, respectively. The Show is judged by local judges and awards are given for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places and Honorable Mentions. These artworks are meant to showcase WAS-H's extraordinary member artists. While only members may enter paintings in these shows, everyone is invited to come and view the exhibit during Gallery Hours. Many of the paintings are offered for sale. Gallery Show Opening Reception Open to the public 1st or 2nd Sundays 3:30 pm - 5:00 pm Every month WAS-H members have a reception to announce the Monthly Members' Show awards and listen to the judge's comments. There are small bites and wine served. While only members can submit paintings, the show opening and exhibitions are open to the public. Paintings may be offered for sale. Members Only 1st or 2nd Saturdays 9 am - 3:30 pm Monthly Member Workshops are a single-day workshop for WAS-H members only, taught usually the first or second Saturday of the month. These workshops are an opportunity to learn a new technique or fit a class into a busy schedule. Students bring their own supplies, unless otherwise stated.Sign-up for a Monthly Member Workshop
| Art Market Members Only may sell Market is open to the public A Saturday in October or March 11:00 am - 5:00 pm Members can sell their paintings at our Annual Art Market. The event is open to the public. The Art Market happens in April.
International Watermedia Exhibition (IWE) Open to the public March Artists from around the world are juried in January to participate in the largest exhibition of our year. The exhibition is held during the month of March, but registration is open from September - mid-January prior to jurying and judging.
Our largest member show is our Annual Members Exhibit in October. This show is juried and judged. Only Members may submit their artwork, but anyone can participate in the special Workshops we feature during opening week. |
