Art for Seniors

Community Outreach Program for Seniors only, age 55+.

Each Wednesday WAS-H hosts a free art gathering for Seniors.  Sessions start at 9:30 am and end at 11:00 am (for the live stream class) and 12:00 pm (for the in-person class).  This is a friendly, supportive group for all levels of artists.  Sessions are led by an artist facilitator who provides an image to paint.  Paint along with the class or bring a different project to work on.  Participants bring their own supplies (only water-media, please).  You must register online to participate. During the summertime, this session is often an open studio where there is no artist facilitator, but seniors can come and paint together.

Safety Alert

Individuals attending Art for Seniors classes in-person at the WAS-H facility

should be aware that they must have the ability to safely descend stairs in an emergency.

When does registration open for the in-person classes?  Each Monday registration opens for the following week's class.  For example, on Monday, February 9, registration opens for the Wednesday, February 18 class.

What supplies should you bring?  Here is a recommended list of supplies put together by one of our excellent teachers:

      Jan McNeil

Jan McNeill has always loved watercolor but with a full time job and 2 children, there wasn’t much time left over!   She was able to begin her watercolor journey 25 years ago when her children became teenagers and she was able to start a weekly night class with Caroline Graham.

Jan has learned a lot from various workshops, teachers, art books, and magazines.  She learned that she does her best work on hot press paper with round brushes.

Jan became actively involved with WAS-H after she retired.   She’s held a variety of board positions including President, Vice President, Gallery Director, and Publicity Director.  She currently is the Board Historian.

Jan loves watercolor and the WAS-H organization!  She hopes that you also find it enjoyable and helpful in your own watercolor journey.

      Linda Flowers

      "Sassy Teapots and Tea Bags"

For this class, Linda will demonstrate how to use tea bags, stencils, and gauze to add interesting touches to teapots.  She will provide the gauze but please bring collage pieces to decorate your whimsical teapots.

Tea and nibbles will be provided to enjoy as we transform a blank sheet of paper into something unique and personal for your kitchen wall.

Linda Flowers began her artist journey in 2008 while living as an ex-pat in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.  While in Rio, she joined a local art group and so began her passion for art.

She has been a member of WAS-H for several years; and as a member, Linda regularly exhibits her art at the monthly gallery shows.  She stepped into the role of Gallery Director from 2023 to 2024 and has also taken part in teaching the Wednesday Art for Seniors class.

Her favorite mediums are watercolor and acrylic.  She loves creating abstract pieces because of the freedom and absence of constraints of realistic representation.  Linda is known in the art circle for her “Imperfect/Perfect” women series.  For this series, she sketches the women with her non-dominant hand and then paints the women with her dominant hand.  You can see her art on Instagram at:  artbylindaflowers.

When not painting, Linda enjoys reading, gardening, traveling, and sailing.

      Cheryl Evans

      Bloom Where You Are Planted:

Working With Positive and Negative Space

Cheryl’s first classroom teaching experience was in a tree house overlooking the ditch on First Street and Craig in Pasadena, Texas. The six-year-old teacher taught her eager pupils how to draw a palm tree and a bunny, and her 40+-year art teaching career was launched. She went on to receive a BFA and MA and teach the wonders of art to students from ages 4 – 94, from kindergarten to college.

She was named Texas Art Educator of the Year in 2012, an ELITE Signature member at WAS-H, and she is still enthusiastically sharing her love of art as a painting instructor. She teaches art teachers as a pre-service and workshop presenter throughout Texas, and has taught workshops at many art leagues throughout Texas. Her paintings are in collections here and abroad, and recently had a very successful one-woman show at the Tower Gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Her work ranges from landscape to portraiture to abstract. Presently she is the Educational Director at WAS-H and a producing watercolorist.

She can still draw a mean palm tree.
