How to create soft edges and gradients on Yupo

Fontaine Jacobs

One-Day Workshop

Saturday, January 20

9:30 am - 3:30 pm

$85 Regular Tuition

$75 WAS-H Members Tuition

This will be a fun class for all levels. Yupo is a slick, synthetic paper that has wonderful lifting ability. With watercolor and the use of objects such as Q-tips, plastic embroidery grids, corrugated cardboard, and other tools you will learn to create unusual textures with watercolor on Yupo. You really can’t go wrong. If you don’t like what you have created, simply wipe it back to the white of the paper and start over. Just relax and discover the joys of painting on Yupo.

Supplies:
A 10-sheet pack of Yupo 74 lb

A roll of Paper towels

Watercolors:

Basic 6 pallet colors (You can use a limited pallet if you want. I often paint with 2-3 colors):

Winsor & Newton

1. Winsor Yellow
2. Permanent Rose
3. French Ultramarine
4. Burnt Sienna
5. Cerulean Blue
6. Raw Sienna

Paint Pallet

A plastic pallet with a lid. It can be rectangular or round.

Brushes:

If you can afford only one brush, buy a #8 round red sable watercolor brush. Otherwise buy the best synthetic or synthetic-blend watercolor brush you can find. Adding a round #4 and a 1″ flat would come in handy for detail work and large washes. Most manufacturers have starter sets that contain very usable equivalents.

Optional objects:

Q-tips

Plastic embroidery grids

Corrugated cardboard

Small Foam paint rollers

Kneaded eraser

Wear old clothes!
