Ground Work: Setting the Foundation for Dynamic Paintings

Explore experimental approaches to creating layered surfaces that form the foundation of visually compelling paintings. Using both opaque and transparent applications, along with various techniques including layered patterns and gesso application, participants will develop dynamic grounds that enhance and support subject matter in watercolor, gouache, or acrylic.


Supply List:

  • Paint of your choice: Watercolors, gouache, Acrylic, or all of the above, and a cup for water.
  • Gesso: white and/or colored gesso
  • Paintbrushes: Variety of sizes including large brushes
  • Stencils or any object that could be used as a stencil
  • Collage papers:(Bring what you have) Any paper that you would like to layer into your surface (patterned rice paper, napkins, old maps, sheet music, receipts, tickets, tissue paper, newspaper, stamps, old book pages, etc)
  • Drawing materials: (bring what you have) Pencil, charcoal pencils, colored pencils, oil pastels, etc
  • Subject: Bring a source photo or a personal object that you would like to draw/ paint as the main subject of your artwork.


Safety Alert: Individuals attending this activity should be aware that they require the ability to safely descend stairs in an emergency.
