Level: Beginner & Intermediate

Learn from the revolutionary art movement of Impressionism! In this class we will study paintings by Auguste Renoir and Claude Monet to understand their interpretation of form and use of color concentrating on their florals. As you know, the best way to study a painting is to copy it, which we will, but not with oils as the originals but with gouache. We will discuss the properties and application techniques of this versatile water medium, which is suitable for a wide variety of styles and subjects. In the second part of the class students will attempt to apply what they learned to their own original painting with the help of the instructor.

Materials:

1) Artist or Designer Gouache (check the label), a set of Reeves gouache is fine (should be available in Michaels). If you like gouache and would like to try a professional brand, buy individual tubes by Winsor & Newton or M. Graham.

If the label on your paint says Artist or Design Gouache, your watercolor brushes will be fine to use with those. We will need 1/2" and 1/4" flats and No. 4 and 6 rounds.

2) You can also paint with Acrylic Gouache (Holbein's brand Acryla or Arteza), just keep in mind that these paints will not re-wet after they are dry, so do not use your watercolor brushes for those.

3) Any type of watercolor paper (Canson XL or other inexpensive brand is fine, hot press works best), or illustration board. Size 9x12 or 11x14, not bigger.

4) Plastic or ceramic plate or a disposable palette (e.g. Gray Matters) for mixing colors, water containers, paper towels, drawing board.

DO NOT SQUEEZE YOUR PAINT OUT BEFORE YOU ARE READY TO PAINT! Gouache has to be fresh out of the tube for best results.
