I am told often in conversation that watercolor is an intimidating medium! It was my “first love” as a painter, but I understand the sentiment, having plenty of experience with other mediums to compare it to. But the aspects of watercolor that seem challenging are also what makes it most beautiful and unique. The important considerations, I find, are knowing when, and when not to control the paint. So, if we work loosely, a willingness to allow the paint some freedom under your guidance and care is essential. It comes down to attitude. With a few rules committed to memory, and a strong sense of adventure, you can achieve a lot!

In this online workshop, we will talk about different materials and surfaces, and explore the behavior of pigment suspended in water. We will also work with many “brush marking” techniques and other ways of adding paint such as Gradated wash, Mingling, and Charging to name a few. Our studies will be applied to fuller projects with different stylings. This is an excellent course for beginners with little or no experience. Are you swimming in questions of “how do I...?” Then this class is for you.

This open and interactive course will spotlight the instructor’s palette, work surface, and reference in real time, so you can directly see exactly how he mixes and applies paint. The process will be step by step based with short demos so you can take time to follow along and ask questions all the way to the finished painting.

Links to a video recording of each session will be provided, should you miss a class or want to review a session. Links remain available for 120 days.

A final written critique is offered through Padlet following the completion of the workshop.

Looking forward to seeing you there!
